The Scriptures Vs the Gospel
John 5;39-40.
Search the scriptures; for in them you think you have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. [40] And you will not come to me, that you might have life.
This gospel passage above is very important to us as believers in Christ Jesus. If Jesus said eternal life is not the scriptures, but, testify of Him. First and foremost, what is scriptures? The Jewish people recognized the scriptures to be the books from Genesis to Malachi; that is what today's Christians will referred to as the old testament or old covenant or the law and the prophets. Most Jewish people only accept these books as scriptures. This books were written before Christ Jesus manifestation on earth, and was called the scriptures. This people were referred to as the people of the books or scriptures. It is very important for us to know what is scriptures. It will help our better understanding of the bible as a book.
Gospel, the gospel is different from the scriptures, while the scriptures detailed the words and activities of the prophets and kings, except John the Baptist, the gospel detailed the words and activities of Jesus Christ. Most Jewish people don't believed in the gospel, but all believed in the scriptures, those that are still waiting for the Messiah to come, but, those Jewish people that believed the Messiah had come, believed in the gospel, and are referred to as people of the gospel.
Today Christians classified themselves as Christ follower, but, unfortunately, they are mostly in error because they do not abide by the terms and conditions of the new covenant established in Jesus blood, the terms and conditions of the new covenant can only be found in the gospel of Jesus Christ, as stated by Him, as recorded in the gospel of Mathew, Mark, Luke and John. Today's Christians practices mixture of the old and new covenant, which is against the principle of Jesus Christ; Jesus said you cannot put a new wine into the old wine skin, neither a new garment on an old garment; He said great will the lost. Matt 9;16-17.
If we want to practice Judaism, let us practice Judaism, and adhered to the scriptures only, and be under the old covenant, if we want to be followers of Jesus, let us adhere strictly to the Gospel only and be under the new covenant only. Why practice both covenants? and suffer lost. Jesus command in Matthew 28;20, is very clear, to go and teach only what He had taught and not what Moses or anybody had taught. We must be Jesus's disciples by abiding by Jesus's teaching. Shalom
