Lagos promise rice, fish sufficiency in December 2016
Lagos State government has assured its citizens of abundant rice come December 2016. This is coming on the heels of economic recession and food insecurity in the nation. The Special Adviser to the governor on food security Alhaji Ganiyu Okanlawon Sanni said this last Sunday in Lagos, at the annual thanksgiving service organised by Martha Band, Divine Ewulomi Evangelical Church of Christ (C & S), Arowojobe, Mende, Maryland. Sanni who spoke to Vanguard shortly after the programme reeled out the Lagos State strategy saying the government has partnered with some other state governments towards agricultural revolution. He said about 500 hectares of land had been acquired from Ogun State government for rice plantation. Also, the State has signed pact with Kebbi State Government on rice project. Similarly, some other states in Nigeria have been contracted so as to get varieties on food sufficiency. In readiness for the bumper harvest, he said, the State government has prepared Imota, Ikorodu for rice mill and this comes under the Lake rice system. He said the State government has entered into partnership with some states that have comparative advantages especially on palm produce and to compliment the 15 percent which Lagos can conveniently provide for its citizens. On fish, he said the State is venturing into natural aquaculture by encouraging and empowering fish farmers into varieties. He said,”85 per cent of fod production is sourced outside Lagos but we want to compliment the 15 per cent and I assure Lagosians that by December 2016, the dream of Lagos on food security will be fully achieved, “ The General Overseer of the Church Prophet Oluwademilade Akpata said the programme with theme “Divine Restoration” was organised to seek the face of God at this point in time.
