China-bound man ingests 74 wraps of cocaine
A 47-year-old father of five, who was arrested by officials of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, for ingesting 74 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.417kg, has blamed his action on the economic recession.
The suspect, Adibe Wisdom, was arrested during outward screening of passengers on an Ethiopian airline flight to China, at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu State.
The Imo State-born suspect, according to the NDLEA Commander at the Enugu Airport, Adeofe Adeyemi, said that he was tempted to take the risk, following an offer of $5,000.
Describing his arrest as unfortunate, Adibe said, “financial hardship and bad economy forced me into drug trafficking. I am a clearing and forwarding agent, but business has been bad, as we no longer get containers to clear as we used to.
“When this offer came, I accepted because my sponsor promised to pay me $5,000 to take the drug to China. Considering the high exchange rate and the need to feed my family, I accepted. But I was arrested by NDLEA officials while boarding the aircraft.”
Chairman/Chief Executive of the agency, Muhammad Mustapha, who noted that the offence of drug trafficking in China was punishable by death, disclosed that a second suspect was also arrested while on the verge of looking for a passenger to hand over some drugs concealed in noodles packs.
Mustapha called on members of the public, particularly passengers, not to collect packages from people at the airport.
