Police rescue man confined for seven years by father

Ahmad Aliyu, a 30-year-old man, who had been subjected to solitary confinement in his parents’ home for seven years, has been rescued.

It was gathered that the victim was subjected to indefinite home arrest by his father and stepmother after they discovered his addiction to illicit substances until a human rights group discovered his condition and alerted the Police, who subsequently affected Aliyu’s rescue.


A human rights activist, Shehu Ibrahim, told The Guardian that Aliyu was locked up by his parents on the suspicion that he had started smoking and involved in drug abuse, adding: “We discovered that the father and his stepmother locked him up for several years.

“When we got wind of this, we quickly informed the Police. Even when the Police got to that house, the parents insisted that Aliyu was not at home until thorough search was carried out and he was rescued from his captivity.

“We learnt his parents will not feed him and Aliyu would sometimes spend days without food and water such that he would have to eat his faeces and drink his urine.”

Spokesperson of the Kano State Police Command, Abdullahi Haruna, who confirmed the rescued of Aliyu, a resident of Farawa Babban Layi in Mariri quarters, Kumbotso Council of the state, added that the Police have arrested his parents for the offence.


In a statement, yesterday, Haruna said: “Kano State Police Command wishes to inform members of the general public that on the 13/08/2020 (Thursday), about 2315hrs (11pm), information received revealed that one Aminu Farawa of Farawa Quarters, Kumbotso LGA Kano State locked up his biological son, one Ahmed Aminu, 30 years old, inside his car garage within his house for about seven years without proper feeding and health care.

“Team of Operation Puff-Adder was raised and immediately swung into action. The victim was rescued and rushed to Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Kano and admitted. The father was arrested. Preliminary investigations revealed that the father confessed to have locked up the victim for three years on allegation of suspected drug abuse.”

Haruna said the commissioner of Police has ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID) for discreet investigations.
