Coronavirus: US records 1,123 new deaths and 45,273 cases within the last 24 hours

At least 1,123 new coronavirus deaths and 45,273 new cases were reported in the United States on Aug. 21. Over the past week, there have been an average of 44,527 cases per day, a decrease of 18 percent from the average two weeks earlier.

As of Saturday morning, more than 5,636,400 people in the United States have been infected with the coronavirus and at least 175,200 have died

Case numbers remain persistently high across much of the country, though reports of new cases have dropped considerably since late July, when the country averaged well over 60,000 per day. That summer surge began to subside after many states reimposed restrictions on business and gatherings, and as more places required masks to be worn in public.

Deaths, though still well below their peak spring levels, averaged more than 1,000 per day in early and mid August, more than double the average from early July.
