We have no plan to impeach Ambode – Lagos Assembly

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday said it has no plan to impeach Governor Akinwunmi Ambode as being rumoured.

Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa at the Plenary session said that there was no truth in the rumour, saying that he received telephone calls and inquiries from prominent members of the public over the alleged impeachment moves against the governor.

The speaker stated that the Solidarity Group of Nigeria and a faction of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Lagos State, led by Mr. Fuad Oki had been insinuating that the lawmakers in the state threatened Ambode to open the state treasury for them, and that they threatened to impeach him if he failed to do so.

According to him, “We are not embarking on any impeachment process against the Governor now. If there would be an impeachment, it would be from the governor and if there would not be any need for impeachment, it would be from him based on his actions,” he said.

Obasa added that impeachment was constitutional, stressing that so many speakers, senate presidents, presidents and others had been impeached all over the world.

“So, nobody can threaten us if it happens because we are representatives of the people,” he said.

Obasa also said if there was going to be an impeachment, It would be done in the open, but that there was nothing like that for now, while assuring that the Assembly was working with the governor to ensure peace and development in the state.

On his part, Majority Leader of the House, Sanai Agunbiade, said there was constitutional procedure for impeachment which did not harbour secrecy, saying that members of the public would know if such would happen.
