President Buhari: nominates two new judges
President Muhammadu Buhari has nominated Justice Sidi Bage from Nasarawa State (North Central) and Justice Paul Adamu Jauro from Taraba State (North East) to fill the vacant seats at the Supreme Court.
A letter requesting confirmation of their appointments has been sent by President Buhari to the Senate.
Senate President, Bukola Saraki, reading the letter at the resumed session of the Senate on Tuesday.
Buhari in the letter asked the Senate to give it the urgent attention it deserves.
Justice Jauro was born on June 26, 1954.
He became a Judge of the High Court in 1998 and was appointed Justice of the Court of Appeal in 2008.
Also, Justice Bage, who was born on June 22, 1956, became a Federal High Court Judge in 1992 while he was appointed as Justice of the Court of Appeal in 2000.
The National Judicial Council (NJC) had earlier recommended the two Judges to President Muhammadu Buhari for approval as Justices of the Supreme Court.
In a point of order raised by Senator Joshua Lidani the senate entertained a motion on the raid and arrests of judges by the Department of State Service on allegations of corruption and bribery.
Some of the recommendations are:
*The Senate condemns the act and manner of the raid by the SSS.
*The Senate support the fight against corruption and states that all security agencies must follow the provisions of the law as stipulated in the constitution
*The Senate committee on Judiciary human rights and Legal Matters is hereby tasked to review the existing law and bring back their recommendations within two weeks
